I am always amazed at how many people ask how long a flight will take.

Why do they ask ?

Firstly I am sure flight times are never the same and can be affected by all sorts of other factors.

Plus surely a look at a map will give a rough idea.

Nearby in Europe - couple of hours

Further in Europe, Dubai etc - 3 or 4 hours

"Nearby" long haul (New York etc) - say 5 or 6 hours

Further long haul - 7 or 8 hours

and why is it always 'the flight' as if there were only one
Surely the flight times on their tickets would be a bit of a giveaway too! Perhaps its the fact that they have to work out the time differences as well.
I'm with chitchat on this one - surely you look at your booking ref that you've been e-mailed or sent and look at the flight times - most eurpoean places are an hour ahead - it's not rocket science.
Dubai isn't 3 or 4 four hours away.
Neither is New York 5 - 6 hours - more like 7.5

7-8 hours long haul won't take you to the Caribbean or Sri Lanka/Maldives for instance
