Cyril Burton was using mirror drawing a hundred years ago. (I believe he was the first to do so):

It still seems to have its uses in research:

It's many years since I studied psychology but, to the best of my knowledge, mirror-drawing does not correspond with any type of conditioning. Instead, it is defined as 'motor learning'.

If you're lucky enough to have access to a good university library, you might find that they've got a copy of the Pedagogical Seminary, Vol 34 (1927) in which L. Carmichael published a paper on 'The History of Mirror Writing as a Laboratory Method'.
