Neighbour Tree Blocking light to my Garden

My Neighbour has a large evergreen tree about 10 metres tall which in the mid to late afternoon blocks most of the sun to my garden. I am now spending more time in the garden with my young daughter and have realised just how much light this tree does block and would like it pruned. I do know that the tree would not be a protected tree as it is an evergreen.

I thought there was a law that if the tree is over 2metres tall then we could ask for it to be cut down. Am I correct with this or completely off track?

why dont you speak to your neighbour nicely about it and ask him if it can be pruned, why is it everybody feels they have to cause trouble with their neighbours when speaking to them civally does the trick most times, even offer to pay towards it,being pruned, there is no law to say other peoples trees and hedges have to be cut down over a certain height.
Agree with norm.
ask them at first, if they refuse, personally i would cut it back or down to size, they should maintain the tree as to not affect you, so the law is against them as they are blocking natural light over your garden
Sorry, Lawrence, the law is not against them. Unless the tree is overhanging the property or it is very bad case, there is nothing to prevent a single tree being grown very high.
I'm afraid as buildersmate implies you're thinking of the high hedge legislation. That only applys to hedges which are defined as one or more trees with overlapping branches.

Unfortunately as people have smaller and smaller gardens a large tree can be just as much a nuisance but it's not covered by the act
