Does anyone know why my boiler makes clicking sounds occasionally? I've just listened to it clicking on and off before eventually firing up.

We've only just had a new pcb board and a new ignition fitted to our 4 year old ideal combi boiler.

It could be the ignition spark you are hearing. This continues to click till the pilot flame ignites
There will probably be at least 2 clicks before the 'whoomph' - the usual process is:
- Fan on to ensure the gas area is purged of any explosive gas mixture (whirr)
- Gas valve pilot open (click)
- one or more ignition sparks at regular intervals (click ... click ...) until either the gas catches (whoomph) or the controller times out (silence.)

Detection of the flame could be electrinic (current flow through the flame) or thermal (expansion tube) or (optical (UV detection - commercial not domestic)
