Why are all front number plates white, but all back ones yellow?

surprisingly black and yellow not black and white give the biggest contrast between colours so when illuminated in low light conditions they are easier to distinguish. B & W at front don't need to be 'cos at night you can't see for the headlight glare. Perhaps they both should be Black and Yellow (lets face it many of natures warnings are this combination - wasps etc.) in the same way we use warning symbols.
To give you a clue about which way round the car hurtling towards you is facing!
