Yes. Numerology.
No. It's twaddle.
Heather, science and the concept of 'lucky numbers' are utterly opposed! The former deals with reality and evidence, the latter depends on mumbo-jumbo.

I expect Heather didn't mean 'science' in the way you have interpreted it. I assumed it was meant as 'method'.
It is widely accepted that Astrology, Numerology and the like have no foundation in fact, but people are still interested and if someone wanted to find out their 'lucky number', they would use numerology.
That's an interesting way of answering a question, HWKE. If the question is unanswerable you merely change the words to make it a different question. (Have you been coaching Tony Blair?)
But since there are no such things as lucky numbers, changing 'science' to 'method' achieves nothing: the whole thing is still a con.
I'm making heavy weather, I suppose, but there are people who make stupid and damaging decisions based on lucky numbers/charms/dates, numerology, astrology and other nonsenses because they actually believe them. One shouldn't encourage their delusions.

I agree that the 'whole thing is a con' and should not be used to influence decision making and would not wish to encourage anyone's delusions in this matter, but the word Heather is looking for is still numerology.
The science is quite simple. Simply make a note of every decision you make that has to do with a number. Note the number you used and whether it did you any good or not.

After a year look at the list of numbers and consequences the number that has done you the most good is your lucky number.

This is what is known as a "long term study" and once it has been completed you can treat whatever tripe conclusion you draw from it as absolute fact and you can guarantee a few tabloids willl come on board as well.
heatherperspiration, you can see from these answers that you were not paying attention in your science lessons in school. This question belongs in RE (or RI). It is concerned with beliefs. Beliefs have no foundation in science since they can neither be proved nor disproved. If you want to believe in numerology you are free to do so as this is still a free society, so make the most of it while you can. One day we may be ruled by a dictator who says you are not allowed to worship the number gods and you'll be thrown into the hell of infinity.

It's either that, or believe in science.
Luck is a term applied to coincidentally beneficial (or in the negative sense, harmful) events when the actual causes leading to apparently random events are neither perceived nor understood much as the term god (or the devil when negatively applied) is used as a substitute "explanation" for a lack of knowledge or understanding of the universe and our relationship to reality.
