70s kids tv series

can anyone remember a kids series from the 70s about a boy trapped in a lift and it opening up into another world,with strange people and a man in a top hat I think,its a very vague memory that I have but with a little jogging I may remember more.Please help if you can.

I seem to remember the lift being in a guest house / hotel. The boy had a friend, another boy and it all started when they went down to the basement?

If this is the same one I've been meaning to post this same question for some time now.

Are you sure you're not thinkin of Jamie and the magic torch,he went under his bed and down helter skelter and came out in another world. Just a thought!!

Definitely not. I've got Jamie and the Magic Torch on DVD and its nothing like it. Besides this 70s series wasn't a cartoon.

It rings a very small bell for me too, but I'm afraid I can't add any more info. I'd be really happy if someone could ID it though.
