Is there a measuring device I can get my hands on that can measure reliably and incredibly accurately.

I am looking to re-fit my kitchen and living room myself and there are a lot of heavy shelves and units I need to put up.

I have considered using a tape measure but am worried if I do not measure correctly then the units will end up looking mis-aligned.

I am looking to hopefully buy online so any resources for accurate measuring tools would be great.

What are you afraid is going to look mis-aligned?
I know you are maybe looking to buy and measuring device but a tape measure is more than sufficiant.

Tell me at what point you don't think it will and I will try and help you by explaining the technique to the different aspects of kitchen fitting.

Hope to have helped
The levelling device is good but even cheaper is to draw a horizontal line using a spirit level and long batten, say about a metre up from the floor, then you will have a reference point from which to drop verticals.
If you are keeping your worktop but re-arranging units then why not just unscrew them from underneath the w/top and reposition until you are satisfied. You could put masking tape on the w/top surface to test out the position of new or moved units.
You could even use masking tape on the walls in the living room to simulate unit/shelving positions. Just don't leave it on too long though.
As suggested in an earlier post a digital Measuring Instrument is by far the most effective tool that you can use, however some of the other more basic techniques th\at were also mentioned would work.

I like to a lot of my own DIY and have gone to the trouble of ensuring I have the right tools for the job so I took the decision to buy a Digital Measuring Tool. The instruments that Leica make are certainly popular and I was able to get one from as litlle as 150 from http://www.buybrandtools.com
