The phrase has been used so often by so many people that there are possibly several answers to your question. It originates from Jesus' criticism of the Jews - 'You are of your father the devil' (Gospel of St John, 8:44), so it's certainly not recent.

Thanks for that . I just seem to remember Tebbutt or someone from the Thatcher years saying it and making the papers for doing so
The late Paula Yates (mrs Bob Geldof & later Mrs Michael Hutchence) called Ian Hislop something very similar on Have I Got News For You; I think that she MEANT to say "spawn"....quote from the BBC website:
"When Paula guest-starred on Have I Got News For You, on 27 October, 1995, she memorably called team captain Ian Hislop 'sperm of the devil', in response to his jibe about her breast enlargement operation."
