I do love a good thriller. Something like, for instance, Frederick Forsyth's "The Day of the Jackal", or the Jack Reacher novels of Lee Child.

I like plenty of action, without any sidetracking of the main story by the hero's family, or his addiction to drink/drugs/whatever.

It's pleasing to discover a new, or even an old but unknown to me, author of this type of story. Perhaps some of you ABers could point me towards some of your favourites, authors as well as particular books. I need something to read before the next Jack Reacher novel appears.

Have you read any Robert Crais,the Joe Pike series ..they are a good read . I always browse this site

Try Jack Higgins, Robert Goddard and John Buchan.

I would suggest:
Ian Fleming's 007 novels.
Adam Hall's Quiller series.
Anthony Price.
These are all older novels.I have recently re-read some of Price's books and they stand up well,though it an odd sensation reading books which contain none of the technology we take for granted these days.
A more recent author is Paul Eddy and his series of books seaturing Grace Flint,stating with Flint.

That website looks good, Shaneystar. I got the R Crais novel "Hostage" from the library today. He's new to me, so I'll give him a try.

I've read a lot of Higgins, Goddard and, of course, Buchan Thicko, but not all. So thanks for reminding me of them.

As for James Bond, I've read 'em all, but I'm sure I'd get much pleasure from reading most of them again. I've got to an age now where re-reading favourite books is a great pleasure. Anthony Price is a favourite, though there are many of his books that I have yet to read. I haven't read the Adam Hall books at all, so thanks for the recommendation.

Paul Eddy and John Sandford are new names, so I'll give them a try. And James Patterson is so prolific these days it's hard to keep up with his output.

Anyway, my thanks to all of you. There ought to be sufficient there to keep me going until the next Jack Reacher book appears.

In return, may I suggest one or two authors to you.

Try Michael Connelly, if you haven't already. His Harry Bosch series is very good, especially "The Black Echo".
I think my favourite of his is "Blood Work", not a Bosch novel, with its unusual motive for murder.

If you like detective/thrillers give Peter Robinson a try. I do believe that his Inspector Banks novels would make a very good television series. They have a Yorkshire dales background, which is a plus for any TV series these days.

By the way baldhair have you tried Henning Mankell ..Inspector Kurt Wallender or James Lee Burke ..the Robicheaux series Both very good.
Peter Robinson is brilliant and Connelly and Robert Goddard.
I recently read a series books by a new author Jeff Abbot ,
A Kiss Gone Bad ,Black Jack Point and Cut and Run ..I think you would enjoy those .

Thank you again, shaneystar. I have tried Henning Mankell, and find his writing a little too bland. Perhaps it loses something in translation. His plots are good though.

I haven't read anything by James Lee Burke - I don't know why. Have you read "Judgement Calls" by his daughter Alafair Burke? I found it very good. And yesterday I got her second book, "Missing Justice", from the library.

I'll keep an eye open for the Jeff Abbot books you mentioned.

Have you tried the womens murder club by James Patterson & co writers, very good start with 1st to Die and the sixth is coming our in April.

I have also started the Eve Dallas stoies by J D Robb the first one is naked in Death and then follow on from there, I think there is about 26 books and I am on number 5.

I will also try some you have recommended

Shaneystar, I see that we have some more Jack Reacher fans among ABers - see post by jimmysipples of 26/03. The latest, out soon, is "Bad Luck and Trouble" apparently.
Child is so consistently good with his plots. I especially liked "One Shot".

"Stalking the Angel" - very good. First of his that I've
read. But not the last! Reminds me a bit of the series novels of Dennis Lehane and Harlan Coben, who both
have protagonists with frightening sidekicks.
