are there any online courses that are free or very cheap audio courses?

Google 'learn afrikaans' and there are plenty of sites to look out.

Go to your local library and see if they have an audio course you can lend.

Buy a language course like this one:

You cannot learn patois as such - it is a non-standard version of any language.
