In Aussie language - to lair(ise) is to behave in a vulgar, flamboyant manner.

flassht Australian returned is Lair < Rial+to
not a good typing day!

that last line should have been ...

flashyt Australian returned is Lair < Rial+to
even -

flashy Australian returned is Lair < Rial+to

(3rd time lucky!)

Thanks very much for your help lector - that sorts out the "flashy Aussie" bit for me. I must be being extra thick today as I still don't see what the clue has to do with the Rialto... Please don't answer again yet, lector, I don't want you to get suspended on my account!
It is flamboyancy:
rather like = fancy surrounding lam and boy
don't worry on my account!

I can't fathom the rest either - so I join you in the dunces class - !

besides the bridge - rialto is ....

the theater district of a city or town, esp. the area around Broadway in New York City.
JMR - if that's the full clue (please check!), there's clearly no def included. Was it thematic? ie. did the preamble state that certain clues lacked definitions?

Firstly thanks to lector and to ulysses100 for your help - much appreciated!

hi Quizmonkey - I've checked and, yes, the clue for 24a is exactly as I've typed above. There is no preamble to the crossword nor is there any theme - it's just a straightforward crossword. I wondered if there was a saying on the lines of "return to the Rialto Bridge?"
My money's on a misprint: the final word of the clue (bridge) has been omitted.
