I'm getting a kitten in a few weeks. Problem is there's a local neighbourhood cat who pretty much seems to think he owns our back garden already. I'm afraid that when our cat is old enough to call the garden her own, she's going to have to fight for the territory! Has anyone got any ideas how we can put the neighbourhood cat off coming into our garden: I was wondering about putting some kind of repellant down.

Your problem is that anything you put down will repel cats will only work whilst it's down and it's also likely to put your own cat off the garden! Apparently though there's a plant available called 'scaredy cat' which is supposed to repel felines. Not sure how effective it would be.
You really need to start trying to put the other cat off now before you get the kitten. Some cats get very territorial and he could terrorise your cat. It's not nice having to do it but if you try repellant and also try to frighten him off (water pistols sometimes work) he may get the message. Of course the opposite might happen and he will be the sort that's scared of his own shadow and he will be frightened by your cat!
