Can anybody please tell me why there appears to be so many Badgers dead at the side of the roads at this time of year, especially this year as I don't think that I have ever seen so many before!

I think their mating season is around February/March time, so they may be straying further than they normally do for food. Their normal nesting sites may also have been disturbed with new housing developments etc.
It could be that they have been run over by a car!

Sorry i could'nt resist.
Could be the mild spring, making them come out earlier to find a mate.
i have seen so many more this year than in the past - south Lincolnshire area.
I once heard a story that illegal badger baiters leave them on the side of the road to give the impression they were run over. Downright disgusting if you ask me.

My sister followed one the other day on her way to work...it was just running up the road and wouldn't get out of the way, it would seem they are on the same par as sheep, so that could also be a possibility. (incidentally it moved eventually, she never ran it over)
I have seen so many more this year as well, I just hope that this means that the badger population is increasing!
Interesting. I only ever see dead badgers too at the roadside here in kent. sad.
