On the news today a woman has donated some Turner paintings to the nation. I enjoy a good picture the same as the next person but do you think some of the praise and also the valuation of some of these paintings grossly overdone. He obviously has tremendous talent but some of the pictures appear hastily done. Is it not in the bounds of all creative artists to produce some rubbish and should we be able to criticize them for what they are?

I think your problem is that you're using the price of Turner's work to form your opinion. The price should be irrelevant. A Turner painting ahould be judged on one thing - how good it is.

As for 'hastily done'....erm, okay....
Turner overvalued? what are you smoking?

This man was the greatest artist ever to come from this country. The French make a huge deal over impressionism and people like Monet's work

Now compare that to the turner donated to the nation

and tell me Turner wasn't doing this nearly 50 years earlier!

If you look at his contempories their pictures look stiff, posed, photograhic.

The whole purpose is to convey an impression of a scene the way someone might experience it without necessarily producing some exact photographic replica.

OK no artist ever produces consistant brilliance but might I humbly suggest you try to better it yourself before dismissing it as cr@p

It's an interesting subject is art. Pile of bricks, Unmade bed, A Turner painting, -is worth what anyone is prepared to pay for it I suppose. I just wish I had that kind of Dosh! But then I'd tend toward the odd Dali or two.
Ah come on Dyli - he couldn't even draw clocks straight :c)
You should see MY clock drawings!
If you think they are rubbish have a look at this link, this piece of tripe sold for $54 million.

As I said, a painting is worth whatever one is prepared to pay for it. The starting price for one of mine is 500. how many do you want?
dunno why don't you show us some pictures ?

Some of Turner's paintings have been printed in the press this week. Any inflated price by any artist bought by the nation has either to be found from taxpayers money or failing that lottery cash.
On a distant analogy but valid non the less if a householder brings in a painter and decorator and he does a slap up job he would be charged for gaining money under false pretences.
No-can-do, all sold out.
