how does a walk in cold room come to lose refrigerant gasses? The other day while I was in charge at work the walk in cold room made a loud bang and hissing noise and lots of fumes. The repair man called in said 'it was the gasses' and now is going to cost an absolute fortune to repair. Could I have done anything to cause this to happen by general use? I am being made to feel very guilty about it happening on the only day I was left in charge.

The cold room is a big refrigerator which will use a compressor to compress the refrigerant gas. What you heard is typical of a burst pipe or joint occurring at some weak point in the system. This could have happened at any time, night or day, whether anyone was present or not. Relax - it wasn't your fault!

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. I know I didnt do anything but it is in a school and the head joked that it was so expensive that he would have to sack a teacher to pay for the repair. It is the sort of thing he would say
