The Earl of Sandwich is credited with it. I think he was in a long session of gambling and didn't want to stop to eat so asked for meat between 2 slices of bread and like they say the rest is history.

Yeah, but that doesn't answer who actually *made* the sandwich. :-) Incidentally, the current Earl of Sandwich is drawing on his ancestor's expertise and is jointly marketing sandwiches with Pret a Manger.
