i bought an electric fire from B&Q 18 months ago and it has decided to pack up on me, I have lost the receipt, can I make a claim for it? I have contacted the manufacturers and they said they would repair it but at my cost. I paid over 300 for it. What is the law in this situation please. Any help much appreciated. Thanks

Do you have any proof that you bought it ? Credit card statement/bank statement/box it came in? How long is the warranty for this product ?

If its out of warranty then thats life I'm afraid. There's not much you can do about it - Did you register the product with the manufacturer ? All these things might have helped but if you didnt register or keep your receipt/warranty then I'm afraid your stuck with a repair bill. It might not be much - have you asked them how much it would be ?
i dont think that b and q are obliged to do anything about it, but i have usually found them quite good, and there is nothing preventing you tryong
The Sale of Goods Act gives you rights when you buy goods from a trader.

The item must be (amongst others) fit for the purpose and of suitable quality - meaning they should be reasonably durable.
The consumer rights last for 6 years from the date of purchase.

A 300 fire should reasonably last longer than 18 months.

Your contract is with B&Q - you bought the fire from them, so you should pursue your claim against them.

It is too late to claim a full refund - but you can claim repair, an exchange or a refund of part of the price.

The fact you no longer have a receipt can be dealt with. If you paid by credit card, debit card or cheque you will be able to get a statement showing the transaction. (You may have to pay). If you bought it on finance you can produce the paperwork to show proof of purchase.

If B&Q refuse to remedy the situation, do not hesitate to take it to the small claims court. It is easier than you think, and cheaper than replacing your fire or bearing the cost of repair yourself.
dosent the six years relate to faults that were inherent at the time of purchase though ethel?
No. This applies to any fault that has not been caused by misuse or abuse of the goods.
