dont know but have the same problem and have trouble cleaning mine off too.looks awful so does anyone know how to get rid of it .
When you in the bath put your finger in side the cold tap its from the water a build up over time
Use an appropiate limescale remover and good old fashioned bleach.
Don't worry about it - everyone's loo is the same. It's not a hygiene issue. Forget it - life's too short to expend time and energy on such matters.
I alwas clean mine by using a toilet cleaner and toilet brush. done twice a week or whatever and it will be clean under the rim as well as the pan.
Lie up the other end, you wont see it then.

pea pod thats what i keep telling her indoors, many thanks for all your replies cheers
Oooo no, can't lie the other end, you'll end up sitting on the plug!

Instead, just put the toilet lid down and voila!!! Can't see it- therefore it doesn't exist.
I use a scrachty thingie to clean under mine, yuk it's revolting and over here when it gets really hot, it does smell strange, sort of sweetish - horrible, so then out comes the steamer. I sometimes put a block of bleach in the tank so that the water comes round the rim. I guess it's dirtyish water from the mains.
bacteria and water
