I have used ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG anti-virus for years on all my pcs without problems.

Both are free, and can be downloaded from this site:

avg to be sure to be sure
You should never have two anti-virus programs running simultaneously on your PC, as this can lead to system conflicts. Therefore, you'll need to uninstall McAfee. Instructions are here:

While everything I've heard about Avast has been positive, I've no personal experience of it. Like the vast majority of the 'regulars', here on AB's Technology section, I use (and can thoroughly recommend) AVG Free Edition. It consistently scores 100% in independent tests of its effectiveness and it automatically updates itself daily:

The most popular firewall, to partner AVG, is Zone Alarm Free Edition:

(Use the top download link. The lower one takes you to time-limited trial software).

If you need an anti-spyware program, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot Search & Destroy both have their fans but AVG's own free product is also gaining in popularity:

I have used AVG and Avast, and though I'm using free McAfee from my ISP I'll be going back to Avast when the subsciption ends - upon first installation it picked up a virus on my laptop that AVG had completely missed despite scanning my system every day. I knew something was wrong but AVG didn't detect the problem.
I have used both avg "slowed my pc down " when i uninstaled & up loaded avast again avast found a heep of stuff avast is best M8

Thank you all very much for your advice.
At the moment only the anti-spam and popup programmes are up for renwal for some odd reson.
When they all are withdrawn from me, which I
presume will be any day now, I shall try out this AVG and also try the spyboot antit spam after I have deleted all their programmes from my control panel..
Thanking you all once again
Best wishes
