bit of a longshot this one. i have recently bought a car from the auctions (astra 2.2 sri) on 02 plate. after a couple of days the engine stated making a horrible noise (knocking/rattling almost taxi like) i checked the oiland it was very low i have topped it up with semi synthetic oil. and this evening i am having a full oil and filter chang-fully synthetic oil. although i know this will not fix. it what could it be?
by the way it had f.s.h and was last serviced in dec 06

This could be any one of many things- the clue, however, is in the fact that you bought it from an auction with very little oil. Think about it, for an 02 car last serviced in Dec 06 to appear in an auction in March 07, it would have to be there for one of only a few reasons- either it's an ex fleet/lease car (a bit old for that), a finance snatchback (unlikely to have been serviced, however..), or it's totally knackered following some catastrophic overheat or oil leak and the owner wanted rid asap! Do you know who had it before it went to auction? That can tell you a lot.

A bit more info is needed really- how does it drive: does it get hot? Does it smoke-under load or off load or all the time? Does it use much oil in normal use?

only had it a week
it was a snatchback
doesn't overheat
doesn't smoke
could be the coil pack. releatvly easy to diagnose and cheap to replace. does the car jolt when you drive?
have you checked out the service history, with the garage.if you have only had it a week, take it back, you get 14 days at bca auctions.
14 days my a$$ buy at auction - your car - your problem !

Best warranty you will get is on major components - the warranty period is until 1 hour after the end of the sale ! However a lot of vehicles are sold as seen hence no comeback whatsoever. To be thinking along the lines of a 14 day warranty on a vehicle bought at auction is total fantasy. Dream on.
