the great pretender ... ad for vw whats it about?

hi, ive been trying to understand that ad and its friving me crazy. Is the bloke at the end wh gets in the vw the same bloke but just not "pretending" any more? or is the bloke jealous because bloke 2 has a vw? or something else?

the 1st one. I don't really get it either.. particularly "the power of understatement"! I like golfs tho so I'm not gna slate it.
