how does a cable modem work?

I'm doing a home learning course and a bit puzzled by the above question. Does a cable modem use RF signals modulated using FSK/PSK/QAM, or does it use optic fibre and laser beams to bounce the signal through the fibre itself.

Cable uses fibre. Dial up modems use PSK or QAM.
