i would think,national express coaches,up to stanstead,then on from there,check their website.
According to National Rail enquiries http://ojp2.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jp
its Chelmsford - Liverpool St, across London a bit and Euston - Carlisle. According to which service you use its about 4hrs 40mins - 5hrs 50 mins. Cost is 89.50 single,90.50 return.
By booking in advance you can get the London-Glasgow sector very much cheaper than that - the cheapest possible single is 15 with GNER from Kings Cross..
When are you going?

If you book well in advance it can be as cheap as 21 each way on the train.

dzug, GNER London-Glasgow trains do not go through Carlisle.
Gef, Debs, sorry - misread as Glasgow! for some reason.
Thanks guys for all your answers very helpful, not sure yet when I am going, just wanted to get some ideas. You've all been great!! Thanks
