I am looking for a book with a story about life on a narrow boat, preferably fairly modern and based in England. Anyone read anything like this they could recommend to me? Thanks.

The Water Road by Paul Gogarty
it is
A Narrowboat Odyssey Through England
Not read it myself but my friend has recommended Ramlin Rose by Sheila Stewart to me.
I can't improve on the answers given above bookwise, but I think you would love a film called The Bargee made in the early 1960s starring Harry H Corbett - not sure if it's on DVD/VHS but it crops up on TV from time to time.
Maybe a bit unmodern for you - early 20th century - but Flower of Gloster by E Temple Thurston (think I've got that right) is a factual account of canal life at the time

It's been reprinted - you can get it on Amazon and probably e-bay as well.
