in general how many miles would you have to travel ( assuming more mpg with a diesel car )to make up the diffence in the price paid for a diesel car & an equivalent petrol engined car ?bearing in mind the higher cost of diesel fuel.

theres nothing to say the diesel car would cost more than the petrol car, the question is to open
it depends on which car you were refering to and its mpg for petrol and diesel
lot more complicated .
Diesel cars have different driving attributes, to get the same power/speed diesels have turbos or twin turbos. Also intercoolers.and no particulate filters. Lots to go wrong!, and cost you to repair.
Diesels have no electronic ignition but have very expensive injectors and fuel pumps- especially modern 'common rail'
I would say you need to do around at least 12K a year to win- even than you need to get rid before the problems start. Unless you do a lot abroard. also is it a company car?, if so great.
otherwise , stick to the tried and trusted.
sorry I meant 'now 'particulate filters - cost 400 or so
