I already have AVG anti- virus but I am running it alongside Windows Firewall. Is Windows Firewall sufficient or should I install a different one I heard Zone Alarm is free but not sure if it's worth changing it.

Zone Alarm offers more protection than the Windows Firewall.

Windows firewall only checks for threats coming IN but not going out (if your PC is trying to access rogue code for example).

Zone Alarm checks both inbound and outbound threats.

I believe the Windows Firewall in Vista now does both.

So I would down load and install the free Zone Alarm firewall (note they are do a chargable firewall as well).

Turn off the Windows one if you install ZA.

Thanks - will try that tonight when I get home
just bear in mind that you will have no internet connectivity from any application after installing zone alarm, you must tell zone alarm to allow that application
