Open headphones give a more 'open' or spacious sound and some people reckon this is more realistic. Closed headphones tend to keep the sound closer in your head. However, open headphones don't keep out surrounding sounds whereas closed ones, by their very nature, do tend to isolate a person more. I personally prefer open headphones - especially sennheiser.
