When Inverness Caledonian Thistle comprehensively beat Celtic in the Scottish Cup a few years ago one of the papers ran the headline:

'Super Cally Go Balistic, Celtic are Atrocious'.

Brilliant!
Not so much the headline but the story that followed it.

The Daily Mirror posted "For you ze Euro 96 is over" in a comedic gesture against the germans who (ironically) beat us in the semi finals. This was i suppose funny by itself, but reading Piers Morgan's (then Editor of the Mirror) autobiography, he was subsequently invited to some anglo-german awards ceremony to receive a booby prize for best contribution to anglo-german relations (or something like that)

He did not go, but instead sent his deputy-editor, who on receiving the award announced, "although i was involved in the creation of the news story, i was only following orders"

made me laugh
Pedro Diniz, a F1 racing driver in the 1990's was involved in a car fire during a race and there was a picture of him in his car while the flames were coming out of the engine with the headline underneath..............................................

DINIZ IN THE OVEN!!!!!!!
Many years ago, when Brian Clough was in charge of Notts Forest, they were playing in Europe.

The team they were playing bought on a substitute who was Japanese, and he scored 2 goals to put Forest out.

The headline the next day was:

Forest sunk by Japanese sub.
Wot? No mention of 'Freddie Star ate my hamster'?
What about the lunatic who raped some laundry workers and ran off. The local paper didn't want to scare the public, so printed the headline 'Nut Screws Washers and Bolts'
I got this one from a book on newspaper style and design.

Compositors were instructed to avoid unfortunate line-breaks which would change the meaning of the headline. To illustrate this, a report of some action during the closing stages of WWII should have read:

FRENCH PUSH
BOTTLES UP
GERMAN REAR

Unfortunately, the compositor saw fit to set this on two lines of type, thus:

FRENCH PUSH BOTTLES
UP GERMAN REAR

Hilarious!!
...and of course there was the time the german footballer Fuchs (I forget his first name) got transferred to Barcelona FC (it was about 4 years ago). The headline was on one of the sports news websites - "Fuchs off to Barcelona"
reading the Cloughie anecdote reminds me of the time Brian was on the touchline and tried to slap a hooligan as he ran past (I think to celebrate a Forest goal). Greavsie (Of "Saint and Greavsie" fame) said on the ITV program "it really was a case of the **** hitting the fan"
forgot about the profanity filter

"It really was a case of the $h1t hitting the fan"
