I am in the middle of having quiet a lot of work carried out at my property. The work is inside and outside, and there are three sets of keys to the property, I have one copy, my partner has another copy, and the third copy was given to the contractors so they could carry out the works, without either of us being there. I came home from work to find 580 stolen from the property - the company is stating there was no proof that it was there and will not refund the money - how do i stand legally on this.

Call the police.
i agree, first point of call should have been the police, not the contractors

I have called the police, and they have said there is nothing they can do without any evidence
without any evidence?
Where was the money being kept? and was there a need for a worker to be in that particular place? ie a drawer in the bedroom? if there was no need for a worker to be there in the first place then I think the police do need to investigate a little further.

Question Author
The money was hidden in amongst lots of paperwork in a desk in the dining room, one contractor needed to go in the room to deal with the electric box.
did the police check the contents of the drawer for fingerprints? Surely the contractor had no reason at all to go into the drawer.
but he didn't need to rifle through your desk now did he? unless he thought the electric box was in that drawer.
As it was cash, do you have any proof of it? and any receipts of it?
of course I would be wanting finger prints of that drawer.

I hope one of the super legal eagles comes on and reads this. It's alot of money to lose, and it's theft for heavens sake.

The police advised it wasn't worth their time to fingerprint the desk, and no the contractors had no reason to go in the desk.
The contractors have advised there is no proof (the same as the police) and therefore they are not prepared to give me my money back. Especially since the police are not prepared to do anything!
so the police are refusing to investigate a theft? so, your next step is to mail the chief of police at your station and put in a complaint.
Where are you.
don't know if this is of any use to you. it's how to make a complaint.
