Finger swipe laptop won't recognise

My new fingerprint laptop continually refuses to recognise my right index finger swipe despite the computer having confirmed it as a perfect match. It usually recognises my left index finger only after several swipes. Can anybody suggest what is causing this? Have my fingerprints been eroded away after years of keyboarding?

it could be dirt on the scanner. Try using a swab / cotton bud with a little cleaning alcohol to get rid of the grease and bits that can build up.

Thanks. Have tried this but it will won't recognise my right index finger at all , but eventually rcognises my left one after a few attempts. Am totally baffled. Know several other people with laptops of this type, none of whom have had any difficulties.
