It is truely awful! He is originally scottish but had to put on an English accent to keep americans happy - this "cut glass" accent is the one which american's seem to associate with England!

Why they couldnt get someon with an English accent, or else let him use his scottish accent, I don't know!
I'm surprised a Scottish guy would agree to adopting an English accent. Your right, it is awful. An American probably wouldn't notice it.
what has he been in before then? I thought i knew his face. You're so right about that accent, its awful, i just didnt realise he wasnt english. How dumb and i?
He's been in quite a few things:http://uk.imdb.com/name/nm0779084/
Apparently he had to change his accent to an English one because Teri Hatcher couldn't understand him when he was speaking. His accent is ridiculous though.

Unruliejulie , you can see what he's been in here :

I used to love watching him in "The Crow Road".
Oops ! Your post wasn't there when I hit submit chazza. Two for the price of one.
I noticed when I went to visit a friend in Kentucky (and I was the only English person in the whole town) that my English accent got more and more pronounced and 'cut glass' every day. I could hear myself getting more and more 'English' everyday but there was nothing I could do to stop it. And I'm from the north west. When I mentioned this to Mr Spudqueen he said that it happened to him when he went on business trips to the States and was the only English person there. Since then I've noticed it in quite a few films - a genuine English actor whose accent sounds very pronounced as he's the only English actor in the film when in other films (where he's not the only English person) he sounds perfectly normal. So it may be nothing to do with being Scottish!
I really cant stand Dougray Scott's character in DH! too corny!
Ridiculous, it puts you off watching it
