Put your foot on the accelerator fully and then try to start it - but dont keep jabbing your foot on and off the pedal

No. For most cars, particularly fuel injection, do not even touch the accelerator after you have drunk your tea.
Only use the accelerator to 'catch' the engine and build the revs AFTER it fires up.
Have a look at your owners manual for instructions on starting the engine, and see if they recommend any throttle.
