Assuming you refer to the version used as the theme to the movie 'Midnight Cowboy' - starring Angelina Jolie's father John Voight - the singer was Harry Nillson. Althoughg many people assume Nillson wrote the song, it was composed by one Fred Neil - but Nillson's distinct vocal style madde the song his own. Nillson was close friends with The Beatles, who quoted him as their favourite musician, when asked by the press whom they admired, in 1967. Nillson spent a large part of the 80's in semi-retirement, working on behalf of gun-lobby causes having lost his close friend John Lennon, and fighting twin demons of drugs and alcohol, which eventually took his life.
Later covered by Beautiful South
Get hold of his album "Nillson Schmillson" You'll enjoy it.
