When listening to the car radio (FM), the sound cuts out for a split second several times a minute. It also happens with my wife's car radio (different car, different radio, different station). In the past I have often rented a car when on business trips and have noticed the same phenomenon (now not only different car, different radio, different station but different country!) What could be causing this?

Maybe your cologne is too strong.
Are you wearing a pacemaker ?
Question Author
That was a good thought, Closer, but no, I do not have a pacemaker. allan k: it's your time you're wasting, not mine.
Tooth fillings? I don't know, I've never had it and I haven't got any tooth fillings...hmmm. Or maybe a metal plate is deflecting the signal or something? Do you know the answer?
Question Author
No, I don't know the answer. It's very irritating. It's not something which has just started.
Are they RDS radios ? It could be when the RDS(EON ?) system is switching between signals to get the strongest. Or it could be that if you have the traffic information system switched on it "thinks" a traffic bulletin is coming in & then changes it's mind !
Oh steve steve steve, if all you've got to get upset about is a little light-hearted joke, then you, my friend must be a very troubled man indeed! .
If that's all that he's got to be upset about then he has very little to worry about at all!! And I was going to say "driving under bridges" as well ;-)
Interesting one, this. This happens to me still on the way to work always in the same place. Turns out that around the area where it happens there is a power sub station. Sometimes interferes with my ECU in the engine too. You can get shields that can stop this, check out yr local car accessory shop. good luck let us know how u get on. PM
maybe you have unwillingly been abducted by aliens and they have installed some kind of tracking device in you which is interfering with the signal :)

Thanks, Dsg, I'll try switching these off to see if it makes a difference. allan k & peanut: I am not troubled at all. It just surprises me that there are so many people who come to this site and spend their time posting flippant answers to serious questions. There are plenty of stupid questions posted where you could exercise your sense of humour.
Hi SteveD, You say it's happened in your wife's car and in rental cars. Has anyone else experienced what you are getting..(other drivers or passengers?) Has your wife driven down the same road and got it too? It could be your mobile phone (though they usually cause interference for a second or so).. communication blackspots, such as bottom of a valley? I know if you yawn you lose hearing for a split second.. are you driving when tired? If none of these than it could be paranormal activity !!!
steveD, I don't see any "stupid questions" posted in this forum. Some people just arn't that good at putting their point over. I think it is very rude and big-headed to presume your posts are better and more important than the others and require the upmost serious approach! There are always car shops you can go to and pay if your after the red carpet treatment ;~}
