Ok, I have just watched superman returns for the first time, and am a bit confused as to where it comes in the story line. I thought it continued on from superman 4, but seeing as his earth mother is in the film, when in superman 3 lana lang asks clark

"is this the first time you've been back to smallville since your mother died"

Can somebody explain?

Just confused me more but thans any way. I assumed it was part of the same story line as the same title music was used.

I think its meant to be a stand alone film in much the same way that Batman Begins ignores the previous film outtings of the titular character.
I thought it was a continuation fron Superman 2 ignoring 3 and 4.
The music is iconic now....and guess was used as a homage to the earlier films
Not really sure. Fell asleep watching it. Not a patch on the originals.
I thought his absence from earth was to explain the Twin Towers because in Superman World surley he would have stopped the disaster...
I think it is supposed to take place about 5 or 6 years after the events of "Superman II" and before the evnets - such as Martha Kent's death - in "Superman III and IV"
