Barbel = fish, Barbell = rod, less one "L"
The alternative would be - Barbe (Rod) + L (line)= Barbel (fish)

Many thanks to both of you. I couldn't find barbell in my dictionary and when I looked up barbe that was defined as a Waldensian teacher!
My apologies JMR I had a quick look in 'Bradford's' and misread the word under 'Rod' and didn't take the time to check in a dictionary!
JMR - I have just looked in Chambers and surprisingly unable to find Barbell, but it is shown in several other dictionaries etc. ...
