i read recently that if things like tvs and computers etc are left on stand by the power used is only slightly less than if on.
can anyone elaborate on this statement? it seems hard to believe.

Yes, its true.
Really confused how do you know that then?

Actually a typical TV will use something like 5 watts, a VCR 5-10 watts. Some of the new TVs less than a watt.

By comparison a 42" plasma TV might use 400 watts turned on the a large tube telly maybe 100 watts

So at first sight it sounds like a lot of fuss over nothing but think for a moment how it adds up say a total of 20 watts on standby for all your devices by 10 million households 200 mega-watts

To put that in perspective the old Sizewell A magnox nuclear power plant consisted of 2 200 megawatt reactors.

So no it's not true, but yes it is a saving that's worth making

I used one of those power monitor meters on my tube tv and found that by leaving it on stand-by for a year it would cost me 30 quid.
There are 8760 hours in a year at 10p per KWhr that's 876 for a Kilowatt year which would mean that your TV would have to be using 30 watts on standby Heathfield.

That's way over average right on the upper end of standby consumprtion - time to get a new TV I'd say :c)

Incidently it looks as if standby mode may be banned
