I'm a bit confused as to what to do. I'm 16 and pregnant with my first child and living at home. Me and my boyfriend want to get our own place so do we need to apply for child benefits once we are moved into a house? Because neither of us are on benefits now and dont need to apply but my mam says we should apply for the baby. Is this the case? I honestly don't have a clue!
You apply for child benefit when the baby is born. When you have registered the birth you get the child benefit form fill it in and send it back with the baby's birth cert. It'll take about three weeks to come once they receive the form but it will be back dated to the day the baby was born as long as you do it within three months. You will get about 16 per week
Ummmm is right, it doesn't matter if you are on beneifts or not, you can legally claim child benefit for your child once he/she is born. It may seem tiny when you read how much it is weekly, but when given monthly it can really help!
lol you clearly didnt read the q carby ... the girl is NOT claiming any benefits. Child benefit is payable to anyone who has a baby, even millionaires. if you have a problem with that, it might be better to petition government, rather than spread evil poison round here. Why dont YOU get off your backside and do something about it if you dont like the fact that people get child benefit for having children. You are the sort of people who just moan and moan, but are completely impotent
Just to be absolutely clear, Child Benefit is NOT means tested and everyone who is caring for a dependent child is entitled to it.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to other benefits as well. If neither you nor your partner are working you will almost certainly be entitled to Child Tax Credit, and possibly Council Tax Benefit. If you are renting, you may be entitled to Housing Beneift. All of these are means tested but the rules vary between benefits.
