refund from wholesaler/retailer

I recently purchased a vcr machine from a local wholesaler come retailer.The vcr keeps rejecting the tapes.I returned the item as faulty and was told that they could not offer me a refund and that they would only issue me with a credit note.I have no configence in this company and would appreciate anybodies opinion on whether I have to accept the credit note or can I insist on a refund.Are there different rules for so called warehouses as opposed to retailers.

I believe they have to give u a refund if the product is faulty. I may be wrong but only offering a credit note is illegal. They may have done this so the company keep the cash
If they are selling to the general public, then they are acting as a retailer and are bound by all the laws.

If it is faulty, you can insist upon a refund.

If you take something back to the retailer for a reason not covered by consumer law (EG changed your mind) then they can give you a credit note.

When you bought the item were you "the general public"?

It is often the case that wholesalers require their customers to sign-up on a business account basis with Terms & Conditions which indicate that any purchases are intended for resale only. Since the buyer is therefore not a "consumer" this effectively limits the Consumer Protection Laws which would normally apply when buying retail.
