Adding another rabbit

I have a 16 week old rabbit and he has been with me since he was 8 weeks old. I was wondering of the possibilities of adding another rabbit or would they just fight? (or if a female then mate?)

Hi ya
I have numerous rabbits, which I rehome and if you read rabbit books they will all tell you differently. However I have found that a male rabbit once it has reached about 6 mths old will try to either fight another male rabbit or mate with it. Put a female with him and he will try and mate. Apart from the ones I rehome I have 4 permanent rabbits - 2 are a couple and have the option of sleeping in separate cages or together. The other two ( 1 of each) are going to be put together once the girlie has been spayed (I leave it until 6 months). If you do get another rabbit I would suggest a girl and neutering!! Introduce them on neutral territory and be on hand to separate them - but I must admit I have only had 1 couple who fought - and it was the girl that was the aggressive one. Good luck with them

Cheers for that Ali :) How much is it approx to get a rabbit neutered? do u think he would be fine adding a male rabbit in with him if i introduced them on neutral grounds then or is it total pot luck as to what will happen? cheers

I've never had much luck with male rabbits being together. I had 2 brothers, Carter and Barry, they weren't too bad but only because Baz was a really docile rabbit (he was more lion head than his brother) I had Carter neutered (approx �30) but he had learnt the mating habit by then and still bullied Barry, so I put carter with a large female and he's very happy now. I have a female reaching adulthood so will get her neutered and put her with Baz so he has some company. Females are more expensive to neuter than males but they get pregnant so easily - they can get pregnant the day after they have given birth!!) that I find its worth getting the girlies done. If you go to your local vets you will have ads from people (such as me) and organisations that rehome rabbits and they are invariably already neutered. They will also have baby rabbits (kittens) to rehome as well - much cheaper than buying them from a pet shop or the paper. My rabs are a constant joy and often run around the house terrorising the cats!!

Many thanks for all your help much appreciated i think i have decided against adding another rabbit with bambam as hes quite aggressive which may prove difficult! :)
