I'm looking to buy a set\block of knives as a christmas present for someone who is really getting into cooking (in particularly healthy stuff like fruit salads etc) and i'm just wondering if anyone could recommend any particular brand?
Any chefs out there?

Global are possibly (arguably) the best, but expensiv, around 40 per knife.
You really only need 2 knives, a paring / peeling knife, and a larger cooke knife. If they are decent quality, the 2 should be able to do most jobs
I would agree with Norm you don`t need to buy a full set. In all my working career only carried 3 at the most.
Been a chef for 22 years.sabatier are a french make and very good.it all depends of the tipe of steel they use in making the knife.the biggest tip is make shure the handle is not moulded around the blade as this is a poor quality knife.make sure the blade goes right through the handle and you can see the blade all the way through, fixed usually with rivets.
Can't comment on Global but not too impresssed with Sabatier. My favourite is a Japanese knife called Caddie available from Clearspring Foods London. It does just about everything and sharpens easily
