I think the belt might have gone. You could do it yourself if you have a bit of know how.

but would that cause the drum not to move at all even if you try and spin it by hand?
I think so. I am trying to look around the site for some one who has answered washing machine questions.

Just make sure everything's switched off before you try anything and if in doubt wait for someone who knows what they're doing.

Hope this helps x

could be something stuck down the side of the drum, the odd lost sock? can sometimes happen and prevent it from moving.
I think it could be something to do with the belt slipping off or breaking causing the drum to stick. the same thing happened to my mums-she got it fixed but it kept happening so she invested in a new one afer a while (though her machine was about 12 years old) so probably just in need of repairing!
Hi lostboy, the drum should move fairly easily, so it could well be that the belt has come off or snapped jamming the drum as freak_unique says, if you turn the power off take the back off of the machine probably about 8-10 screws holding it on, you will soon see if belt has gone, you may be able to see if you remove top, probably just acouple of screws at back holding that on, normally once you take those screws out the top slides forward and lifts off, make sure you unplug it before attempting any panel removal, good luck, Ray, let us know how you get on.
