The first Bond movie was Dr. No in 1962, with Sean Connery as the first, and by a long way the best, James Bond. The first book was Casino Royale which was published in 1952.
I have read the book, the basic plot remains the same as far as I can remember but there are differences in the characterisation and various bits and pieces have been pruned away for the sake of the film.
The book was much better. Honeychile Rider came out the surf naked, except for a belt holding a knife. Bu this first film was the one closest to Fleming book, shows 007more like the books portray him, a tough killer. The book and the fim hol dup surprisingly well after all these years.

I just reread all the books, one after another, in the order they were published. The earlier ones were the best by far.

But, as they say, the past is another country.
sorry to disagree BenD but Casino Royale was the first film made with David Niven as Bond although this was done as a comedy it was the first film to feature the James Bond character.
No, the film of Casino Royale was made after several of the official Bond movies. But it had been done as a TV drama before the films came along (I believe this is the reason why Albert Broccoli couldn't get the movie rights for it).
sft42 has confused the stupid cash in movie - Casino Royale - starring David Niven, with an early American TV play, based on Casino Royale. That had the first portrayal of Bond by an actor.
I know that this isn't exactly on the question bu the first person to play James Bond was Bob Holness, the guy from the kids quiz show Blockbusters. He played him on a South African radio serial in the 50's. Pub quiz stuff...sorry
Peter Sellers also starred as James Bond in the film of Casino Royale.
Wasn't it Woody Allen who played 'little Jimmy Bond' in Casino Royale, I don't seem to remember Peter Sellars in it, or am I completely wrong???
Im sure i can recall they made 2 or 3 feature length tv episodes of james bond somewhere along he line. P.S. My favourate bond was roger moore
Actually the first book was Live and Let Die. Embarassing for you wrong people.
