Is this possible at all? Can a mobile phone be connected to a stereo system to play the mp3s? Many thanks!

Yes. What phone have you got?
If your phone has a standard 3.5mm out socket you can buy a lead for about �5 that will connect. If you've got a sonyericsson then you might need an adapter first, then the lead, but these only cost �1.99 on ebay ( i bought one!)
