I am just before installing ceramic tile on my batroom floor. I am putting down concrete based backing board. Can I tile around my toilet or does it have to pulled up to install tile under it?

Looks much better if you take up the toilet and tile underneath. I know it's a pfaff but it's worth it.
our bathroom man tiled around ours very neatly and then put a silicone bead round. If you are not as good at cutting curves as him, lifting the loo will give a neater effect
The proper way is to have the toilet lifted, because if a plumber needs to work on the soil pipe seal or remove the pan he will encounter many problems ,which i'm sure he would take great delight in telling you!
