New laptop

THis is probably a very silly question.I have just got a new laptop.I can transfer files from the laptop to my destop without any trouble but I cannot transfer files from the desktop to the laptop.In fact I cannot find any mention of the laptop (or I don't think I can ) on my desktop.
Any ideas please ?

Well, how are you connecting them? Ethernet?

Are they both running XP?

Have you actually shared the drive on the laptop? If not, at the laptop, double-click "My Computer"
Right-click on the C drive (or whichever)
Click Sharing and Security
Check the box "Share this folder on the network"
