In tune with the earlier post about hair do you think that older women look odd with long hair and if so, at what age do you think they should cut it.

I am 40 with hair down to my bra strap but I dread that look where you see a woman with long hair and she turns round and her face is craggy and doesnt match her hair!

my mum is 55 and has exroadinarily thick, very long (in between bra strap and waist) hair. She does colour her haif, but she looks fabulous and you would never guess that she is 55.

I think that the rule with long hair is not how old you are, but the quality of you hair. I'm 30 and have spent the last 5 years growing my hair long. I have quite fine hair and it just didn't do anything for me at all. I had it cut very short a few months ago and now I love it and it looks great and people have commented that I don't look 30 at all.

I think long hair only looks nice if it is in tip top condition and is well looked after and relatively thick. thin straggly long hair is not a good look on anyone at any age.

If you hair looks nice, keep it long, don't cut it just because the calendar says you should.

liquidspace... so long as the 'hair down to your bra-strap' isn't growing from your chin, it's not a problem!!... : )
yeah - agree with snagged, as long as it isn't sprouting from everywhere and is clean no probs.
growing 'up' to your bra-strap from down below would be a no-no too!!... : )
I always said that when I am older (I do not see 40 as old) that I will NOT have short hair.
I don't see anything wrong with long hair at any age as long as its clean.
My mum has long hair and I think she remains a very attractive woman and she's older than you Liquid... although she's refusing to dye it despite me begging her too, but she's happy and as long as you are too go for it.
well im almost 40 and my hair is almost down to my bum , am beginning to think the same that maybe i should go bit shorter!!

snagged - you reminded me of my joke:

"Ive got long hair all down my back - none on my head, just down my back!"
My wife is 38 and her hair is waist length and lloks gorgeous and her mother is nearly 70 and has waist length silver hair which again looks amazing. Doesn't matter how old you are, nice hair is nice hair. Why do older ladies always have to de-sexualise themselves and look as though they've been attacked with a pair of sheep shears and a bottle of perm? Older women can be stunning, and hair style is key to that.
I think it really depends on the individual person. Long hair at any age suits some but may not suit others. It also depends on the condition of the hair and the styling. I see nothing wrong with an older woman having long hair as long as the style suits her face shape and her hair is well looked after .
my two best friends nans had very long hair (ones had hers cut short now) but i always thought what a nice change it was to see older ladies with long hair, they didnt dye it, both grey and proud and it looked gorgeous on both of them!
I agree, there is nothing wrong with having long hair at an older age. It may become sad when you don't look after your hair, or if your hair is very thin, or if you wear too much make up. I do think some older women look very sad if they want to look young too much. I think at an older age, you don't particularly need to be fashionable, at least not to the latest young fashion. Be more like elegant, clean, sleek. Don't go for the too fancy one. And don't wear bright colour make-up. And make sure you feel confident when you step out. Good luck!
Very long hair, especially if it's in bad condition and not very thick, can age anyone if it is not styled and just hangs there and does nothing to complement your features. As we age, the facial area can become a little saggy so long hair will accentuate this. Some women past their 40s or 50s probably can look great with very long hair but, for instance, I think Lorraine Chase looks very old when her long hair is let loose (yet she has beautiful hair). If you're hair is in good condition and having long hair still suits your face and body shape, then keep it long. Perhaps you just need a re-style but without losing too much length.
remember, the last few generations of old ladies have come from a time when that short, curled hairdo was fashionable - the weekly shampoo and set - the style is the same as in all those old photos from the 40s, 50s, 60s etc

same way most old men have short back and sides, as they did as a young man, so do old women keep the style they had most in their younger days

when this generation of people are old, their hair will probably be a lot more like they have it now.

same thing goes for clothes - the beige, the tan tights, the shirt and tie to do the gardening, the trilby, etc etc - all from their youth.

its not an old persons uniform, just that they have never adopted a new, more modern style

having said all that, it is also probably just easier to manage too.

I for one will never have short hair.

Thanks for your answers, especially the last two which I agree with very much. I do maybe need a restyle and it definately has got thinner as Ive got older. It looks nice today though as Ive washed and straightened it, if I dont then its naturally wiggly (never used to be). Thanks again.
