I agree MM strikes yet again.
eerm no. You need to go back further.

Pakistan both East and West were part of British India until partition in 1947
Well, I didn't know that. I thought East & West Pakistan were always seperate states from India. You learn something every day.
East Pakistan -
A former region of southern Asia on the Bay of Bengal. Originally part of Bengal, it was held by the British from c. 1775 and then by Pakistan from 1947 to 1971, when it achieved independence as Bangladesh.

{On the 3rd of December 1971, the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) struck a number of Indian airfields in northern India. By midnight, India was officially at war with Pakistan. Two weeks later, the war was over. The Indian Army had overrun erstwhile East Pakistan (Bangladesh) and taken 93,000 POWs. It was one of the swiftest military campaigns in recent history...}

Mepham clue is cleverly worded ....
It was 'part of India'
and it did finally 'achieve independence in 1971
Shocked by JimJools's second contribution! He/she/they must be a whole lot younger than I thought!
I can remember it all happening, even though I was only a kid at the time - 1947.
