My husband answered an advert to train as a home inspector - part of the Government's Home Information Pack Scheme to be launched next year. He's been for the interview, passed the selection process etc and has been told it will cost him 5,800 to train but he can expect to earn 130 for an energy rating report and 200 for a home condition report. It's caused a major row as I'm reluctant to part with cash we haven't got but he thinks he on to a winner and is going to be quids in. Also, it was advertised in our freebie paper which has made me even more wary. He thinks I'm too negative. If anyone has any knowledge or just observations on this type of thing I'd be grateful. Thanks.

I would not part with any of your cash. This scheme I believe is being downgraded because it is unworkable so I would look into the government web site that handles it to find the latest info.
Hi medsecslave,

Anyone who is willing to part with 5,800 will pass any election process and will be told that they "CAN" earn all sorts of money.

Take a little bit of advice and keep your money in your pocket.

Regards
Take a look at the contributions to the debate about HIPs on the BBC website. Quite a few of these come from people already in training as inspectors. They seem to back your view, rather than that of your husband:

Yep as above, Donald Duck would get accepted if he paid 5k, tell the old man not to touch with the proverbial barge pole. The whole scheme is very likely to be scrapped as unworkable anyway. I mean would you accept a survey etc that was done by someone else? The scope for abuse is staggerring. It's a nice idea but when thought through the holes become apparent.

Thanks for those replies - just what I needed to back up my argument and particularly the link to the website - thanks Chris.

He's not going ahead with it after all, says he was beginning to have second thoughts anyway (yeah right!). I am very grateful to you all for responding in my favour. Thanks again. xx
I'm so pleased to have helped talk him out of it!
